Sakamoto Sensei Peter Giffen
We are a group of long time karate practioners that decided to add a new to dojo in this area, and add another member to the Ryusei family. There are currently 3 other dojos in Ontario and one in Quebec, and there are also groups in Japan, USA and Australia.
The Ryusei style, long under development by Sakamoto Sensei, our chief instructor, was formalized in a new organization in 1997, and since it grew out of, and followed the teachings of O Sensei that started the Chito Ryu style in the 1940’s, all the senior members are previous practioners of the Chito Ryu style, who have found the path shown by Sakamoto Sensei to closer follow O Sensei’s teaching.
The Chief instructor for Canada is Peter Giffen, 7th dan and Kyoshi, who have more than 50 years of experience competing and teaching karate. He is currently running the Barrie dojo, but also teaches the black belt class in our dojo.
We have now also started a kobudo class, which is taught by senior instructors. Class is for teens and adults and runs on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 6 pm.
As you can see we are starting modestly with classes for children and teens. Like everybody else in the world, we were rudely interrupted by COVID , but we are back now, and expect to develop quickly into the complete range of the age groups and disciplines practiced in other Ryusei dojos.
We are operating out of the new Martialarts.ca facility at 4385 Sheppard Avenue East, Unit 13, Scarborough, and hope to see you there.
